The Recipe for a Balanced Look

The Recipe for a Balanced Look A colorful kitchen doesn't necessarily need look-at-me cabinets or a bold backsplash; instead, color can be added in little doses for a more balanced look. Here, designer DD Allen creates a tranquil background with gentle grays then brings in lots of kicky colors with the kitchen accessories, artwork and furniture.

Rhapsody in Blue Having a soaring, exposed ceiling, Wedgwood blue tempered glass cabinets, quartz countertops and pro-grade appliances, this Florida kitchen is a chef's dream. A luxury choice, the glass cabinets aren't just easy on the eyes, but they're also a snap to keep clean.

Fiery Orange Designer Robin Siegerman chose the upper cabinets' extreme hue because of its mood-lifting qualities. Various studies have shown that the color orange arouses confidence and a positive prognosis. Considering most people spend a little time each morning at the kitchen, beginning every day with a cheery outlook is best.

Vibrant, Buttery and White Designer extraordinaire, Sarah Richardson, breathed new life into her 1885 farmhouse with this bright and airy kitchen. White wall cabinets provide plenty of storage room and act as a clean backdrop to the kitchen real star: the massive butter-yellow island which features a magical salvaged newel post in the corner of this pub. Rather than restaining the 130-year-old hardwoods, Sarah chose to strip then protect them with a clear coat so the timber's natural gold tone would show through.

Chocolate Yellow and Green All Over Rich, espresso-stained wood cabinets provide a dark backdrop to this kitchen's bright yellow island. Sustainable materials, like a mosaic backsplash made from reclaimed stained glass, quartz countertops, cultured appliances and low-voltage lighting make this HGTV Green Home kitchen just as eco-friendly as it's beautiful.

Copper, The Hot New Metallic Remodeling experts Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, the Toilet Cousins,  offer this moody, dark kitchen just the correct quantity of glitz using a customized copper range hood. Positioned above the freestanding gas stove to eliminate smoking smoke, steam and fumes, its sculptural form unites the best of function and form.

Smoky Sophistication As any lover of her displays can attest, designer Sarah Richardson certainly is not shy of bold colours -- but she is equally adept at developing a luxury space utilizing a softer, neutral palette. To update this formerly cookie-cutter suburban kitchen, Sarah utilized shades of grey in the island, honed granite countertops, fabrics and Carrara marble mosaic backsplash.

Easy Being Green This kitchen showcases the homeowners' love of green having an key lime-hued backsplash. After looking at dozens of green tiles, she picked Walker Zanger's Vibe-Ashbury for its saturated shade and curvy arabesque shape.

Dramatic Red Saturated red walls in this kitchen with designer Meg Caswell are a real showstopper -- but the extreme hue is not courtesy of a tile backsplash, instead Meg painted the walls red, then covered them with glass panels for extra shine and ease in cleaning.

Beachy Blues Just a short distance from the shore at Jacksonville, Fla., this HGTV Smart Home kitchen's watery color strategy certainly places you in a vacation state of mind. Designer Linda Woodrum chose crisp white to the wall cabinets, quartz countertops and glass subway tile backsplash then painted the ceiling and walls in a soft teal. For the kitchen's hard-working island she chose a saturated turquoise.

Sunny Yellow John and Anthony, the Toilet Cousins, relied upon the perennially popular color combination of yellow and gray with this kitchen remodel. Sleek, laminate cabinets at a bright and airy color pair beautifully with the cook area's stainless steel appliances and island countertop.

A Splash of Pumpkin This sleek, ultra-contemporary kitchen -- with a vast amount of counter space -- is the perfect place for preparing romantic dinners. Its Macassar ebony veneer cabinetry and glazed pumpkin walls emit a warm and inviting atmosphere in the moment guests walk in the room. To add a shiny, contrasting appearance that nonetheless generates warmth, designer Jennifer Gilmer blended in white lacquer accents from the island to the countertop. Cool and Playful To suit her clients' love of diverse interiors and all things vintage, designer Meg Caswell created this kitchen that has a decidedly whimsical, retro vibe. Fused glass tiles in colors of blue, green and white make a funky backspash while the wall cabinets receive a coating of soft powder blue color. Meg tops a creamy centre island with a glass countertop with just a hint of green, reminiscent of those jadeite pieces collected by the homeowners.

Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade It is true that yellow is a lively, eye-catching colour that may easily uplift moods and inspire, particularly in the kitchen. Across the top half of the walls, yellowish is viewed within this family kitchen and in the island fixtures. On the other hand, the playful color scheme is undeniably the first thing noticed. The yellow, combined with white cabinets, coffered ceilings and a gentle backsplash, emits a airy texture that would make anyone feel right at home. Image courtesy of JAS Design Build

Moody Blues These high gloss wall tiles from Italian producer Fap Ceramiche add maximum color while removing anxieties more than kitchen spills and splatters. To break up the sea of azure, a painted chalkboard border can exhibit a recipe, notes to a grocery list.

Minty Green Cousins on Telephone Anthony and John chose the cabinets' fresh, minty colour to tie in with the remainder of this house's vintage details. A Carrara marble countertop and mirrored tile backsplash keep the kitchen feeling airy and bright.

Cooking With Blueberries A subtle dose of blue adds just the right amount of vintage-inspired charm to this contemporary kitchen. The most noticeable design element is the scattered blue-and-ivory tile backsplash over the stove. The jagged tile placement makes the backsplash the focal point and ties the whole color scheme together. Image courtesy of Slifer Designs

Cherry-Stained Cabinets The walls and countertops may be a cool shade of white, but sometimes the most color, saturation and pattern can lie at a gorgeous piece of wood. SPG Architects designed this modern kitchen at Casa Torcida about a species of local wood and refined stainless steel elements to get a crisp, polished look. Red Hot Kitchen Nothing spices up a wealthy, gourmet kitchen like a lively pop of red. These vibrant barstools are an ideal complement to dim wood cabinetry and floors in this outdated World-inspired kitchen.
